Letter from a Former Resident
Twenty four years ago, a little girl of 10 left the little barrio of San Raymundo, Balungao, Pangasinan. This little girl was then given a chance of a lifetime to escape the rigors of harsh life in the barrio and the burnt of the seething heat of the sun from cultivating the land that her father was farming for his relatives. This little girl was thought to be special by her father, so, despite of great pain, her father allowed her to be adopted by relatives in order to give her a life that was different from the life the he lead all his life. This little girl he said to himself will go places and achieve greatness. Her father dreamt of something greater for his last born, so in 1980, he said goodbye to his little princess. He knew that his little girl will be different from his older children. His little girl excelled academically and was so different that he saw her always alone with her books at such a very early age. Her father knew that if she was to stay in that barrio, all of the talents she displayed would all be wasted.
That little girl ladies and gentlemen is yours truly Dahlia Deedee Connors. San Raymundo Elementary School is where I first learned how to be defiant! Looking at the photos today brings me back memories that are too painful to remember. I walked miles to school with hand me down clothes and bags that my mother traded with chicken. When I went back this past April, the school still uses the curtains I donated 17 years ago. It really touched me indeed how much caring it was paid attention to a mere piece of fabric I gave from long ago. I witnessed children with so much potential yet could sense so little hope from their eyes. San Raymundo is one of the poorest barrios in Balungao. I am emailing you ladies and gentlemen to ask for your assistance in providing a little tarnish of hope to the children of this barrio. I am most certain that never in their short lives have they ever foreseen anything from anybody so unexpectedly. I am not a Christian, but the spirit of giving lies upon us all during the Christmas time.
Thank you in advance for your much needed generousity.
Deedee Connors
